Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield makes two cap lines that matter for most Framingham homes: the standard single-flue cap and the multi-flue cap for wider crowns. The single-flue version fits most square, rectangular, and round tile liners by clamping to the outside of the flue tile. The multi-flue version bolts to the crown itself and spans two or more flues.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: HeatShield caps are sized to the flue tile, not the metal liner inside it. If your home has a stainless liner pulled through the original clay tile, you need to measure the tile opening, not the liner diameter. We’ve seen plenty of homeowners order a 6-inch cap because that’s the liner size, then discover the clay tile is 8×8 and the cap won’t seat. Measure outside dimensions of the tile crown. That’s the number that matters.
The OEM HeatShield caps use a stainless steel mesh screen and a galvanized or stainless hood. Aftermarket equivalents are widely available, and for a cap sitting out in Massachusetts weather, we generally recommend full stainless over galvanized. Galvanized caps last 5 to 7 years in Framingham before the zinc coating surrenders to road salt and acid rain. Stainless runs 15 to 20. The price difference is maybe $40 to $70. Over the life of the cap, stainless is the cheaper option.
Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining around the ceiling or wall near the chimney. The cap’s hood or mounting band has rusted through or loosened, and rain is dropping straight down the flue. This shows up fastest in older Framingham homes with unlined masonry chimneys.
- Rust streaks running down the brick below the cap. The cap’s mounting hardware is failing and bleeding rust onto the masonry. This is cosmetic at first, but the same rust is weakening the band that holds the cap to the tile.
- Debris inside the firebox or on the smoke shelf. Leaves, twigs, or nesting material means the side mesh has torn or pulled away. A torn mesh is an open invitation to squirrels and chimney swifts, which are active all over Framingham in spring.
- Visible rust-through on the hood itself. Once the hood perforates, the cap is done. It’s not sealing anything. We see this most often on galvanized HeatShield caps that have been up for 8 or more years.
- A cap that moves or rattles in wind. The mounting band has stretched or the clamp screws have backed out. If it moves, it will eventually leave. A loose cap in a Framingham winter has a way of ending up in the yard by March.
