DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Framingham Owner’s Guide

If you have a DuraFlex chimney cap that’s rusted through, lifted off in a nor’easter, or let water pour down your flue during the last thaw, we stock DuraFlex-compatible caps and install them across Framingham, usually within a few days of your call. A complete DuraFlex cap replacement in Framingham typically runs $285 to $425 installed, depending on flue size and whether the mounting collar needs rebuilding. Most owners discover the failure two ways: a rust stain running down the chimney chase, or the sound of water dripping into the firebox during a hard rain.

The good news is a cap swap is one of the cheapest chimney repairs you’ll ever make. The bad news is a failed cap left alone through one more Massachusetts winter turns into a $2,000+ liner replacement. We’d rather catch it now. Wendell Pike has been running chimneys across Framingham since before half the newer subdivisions off Route 9 even existed, and he’ll tell you straight: a cap is cheap insurance, and if yours only needs a re-secure rather than a full replacement, that’s what we’ll recommend.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes caps in two main families: the standard single-flue cap (round or square, fitting 6″ to 13″ flue tiles) and the multi-flue cap for wider chimneys with two or more flue openings. If you have a DuraFlex liner system, the cap attaches to the liner’s termination plate, not the masonry itself, which changes the install and the part you need. The most common DuraFlex liners we see in Framingham homes are the 316L alloy flex kits, and their caps use a specific collar diameter, typically 6″ or 8″.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into: DuraFlex caps are matched to the liner’s inside diameter, but the mounting collar is matched to the flue tile’s outside dimension. If your flue tile is 8″x8″ but your liner is 6″, you need a cap with a 6″ opening and an 8″x8″ base. Order the wrong combo online and it either won’t sit flush or leaves a gap that lets rain drive under the cap. We keep the common Framingham sizes on the truck: 6″ round, 8″ round, and 8″x8″ square bases. If yours is an odd size, we’ll measure on-site and have the right part within two to three business days.

OEM DuraFlex caps are well-built, but we also install quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia when the customer wants a heavier-gauge option or a specific spark arrestor mesh rating. The honest difference: OEM matches perfectly, aftermarket often uses a slightly thicker stainless but may need a little finesse on the collar fit. We’ll show you both options and let you decide. Top Hat Chimney is an independent local company, not affiliated with DuraFlex, so we can give you the unvarnished view on what’s worth the money.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks down the chimney chase or flue tile. This means the cap’s galvanized or lower-grade stainless components have started oxidizing. Once rust shows on the outside, the mesh underneath is usually paper-thin and ready to crumble when a branch hits it.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s hood has cracked, lifted, or the collar seal has failed. Water entering here isn’t just a nuisance; it soaks into the flue liner’s insulation and accelerates liner corrosion from the inside out.
  • Birds or squirrels in the chimney. The spark arrestor mesh around the cap sides has torn or corroded enough for an animal to squeeze through. In Framingham, squirrels are the usual culprits, and they will absolutely pack a flue with nesting material.
  • The cap has shifted or tilted. High winds off the Sudbury River valley or ice heave from a hard winter can loosen mounting bolts. A tilted cap lets rain enter at an angle the hood was never designed to deflect.
  • Draft problems that appear suddenly. If your fireplace starts smoking back into the room on windy days, a failing cap may no longer be directing wind over the flue opening properly. This one gets misdiagnosed as a damper problem all the time.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For DuraFlex-compatible cap installation in Framingham, here’s what we charge, parts and labor included:

  • Single-flue cap (6″ to 8″ flue): $285 to $340 installed
  • Single-flue cap (10″ to 13″ flue): $315 to $375 installed
  • Multi-flue cap (two or more flues): $380 to $425 installed
  • Mounting collar rebuild (if existing base is rusted out): add $60 to $90

Every quote is given before we touch anything, and the number on the phone is the number on the invoice. The price includes the cap, mounting hardware, sealing of the collar joint with high-temperature silicone, and hauling away the old rusted piece. If we find the flue tile itself is cracked during the swap, we’ll show you the photo and give you a separate quote for that work. No surprises. Every installation carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it leaks or shifts within 90 days, one call brings Wendell and the crew back at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely inspect the cap from the ground with binoculars and check for the warning signs listed above. If you can get a clear look and the cap is still seated square, no rush. But we don’t recommend swapping a chimney cap yourself, and not because we’re protective of the work. You’re working at roofline height, often on a ladder in wind, with a stainless part that catches gusts like a sail. The real risk is mismeasuring the flue and collar dimensions and ordering a cap that doesn’t seal, which leaves you worse off than before and out the cost of the wrong part. In Framingham, with ice, moss, and fifty-year-old flashing in the mix, roofs get slippery fast.

If you’re comfortable on a ladder and want to inspect, we’ll walk you through it over the phone at (781) 390-9211, free. If it turns out you need a new cap and don’t want to climb, we’ll handle the whole thing, measurements to cleanup, usually in under two hours.
