Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco makes a handful of damper styles: top-sealing dampers, throat dampers, and barometric dampers for oil-fired appliances. The one we see most in Framingham is the top-mount damper with a cable pull, usually paired with an older masonry fireplace. These are the ones where the cable rusts, the spring gives out, or the plate warps from heat. We also work on their rectangular throat dampers in fireplaces and barometric models on oil burners. Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle won’t close the damper fully. Usually a stretched or frayed cable. Over time the cable loses tension and the plate hangs open a half inch, letting warm air escape all winter.
• A musty smell comes down the chimney after rain. That’s a top-mount damper whose rubber gasket has cracked or shrunk. Water gets past it and settles in the firebox. Framingham gets enough rain and snowmelt that this is the second most common call we run.
• You feel cold air pouring into the room even with the damper shut. The plate itself may be warped. Famco top plates sit close to the crown and take years of direct heat and weather, and warping means no seal, no matter how hard you pull the cable.

DIY or Call Us?

The cable and plate on a top-mount Famco damper are not inherently dangerous to work on the way chimney crown work or a liner is. The risky part is the roof itself and the chimney crown, especially in Framingham where we get ice, moss, and older masonry.
